I Got An Empty Envelope

few 'loose change' on climate

Brussels, Belgium - The European Commission has today made a small step forward toward Copenhagen, indicating for the first time a specific figure for the financial resources to be allocated to developing countries to tackle climate change. The total between two and 15 billion € per year until 2020, however, is hopelessly inadequate.

"The Commission is trying to get up from the table leaving just the tip, and without paying the bill that saves the planet from catastrophic climate impacts - German says Francis, head of Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaign. - The Commission has also made it known how these funds will be generated at the international level. "

A first text of the Commission indicated that the financial commitment would be between 13 and 24 billion euro per year. Now, after heavy pressure from the States, this figure has been resized to just 2 to 15 billion, with particularly heavy cuts to combat the deforestation of the last green lungs of the Planet. Just a year ago, the Commission itself has estimated that to stop deforestation by 2020 was necessary to € 30 billion to 75 billion globally.

"European politicians are playing with numbers, without understanding that entire ecosystems can be deleted with the stroke of a pen. The survival of entire communities at risk, "warns Brussels Sebastien Risso, Greenpeace EU director.

Greenpeace urges the European Commission to fulfill its leadership on climate change, pledging to provide financial resources of at least € 35 billion a year by 2020 in addition to aid already in place. These resources should be managed under the supervision of the United Nations and will serve to stimulate the development of renewable energy in developing countries, halting deforestation and contribute to adaptation to the impacts of climate change already know the inevitable.
