This morning a delegation of mayors of northern Sardinia, and the chairman of the province along with Greenpeace Olbia Tempio occurred in front of the entrance to the Ministry of Environment with a warning sign that hangs over their head. "For months we have a meeting with the Minister Prestigiacomo - explained Giorgio Monti, campaign manager of Greenpeace Ocean - The situation of the Strait of Bonifacio is unsustainable. In August, Italian and French local authorities have signed an appeal, but while the French Minister of Environment is carrying out work in that area to prevent high-risk pass through ships with hazardous materials, the Italian minister has so far been completely deaf. Despite the meeting with the Executive Board, we are disappointed with the absence of the minister. On the head of all hangs the threat of a possible, imminent environmental disaster. The minister wants Prestigiacomo be responsible? ".
The Strait of Bonifacio, an area rich in biodiversity and valuable landscapes and tourism, environmental risks every day of the tragedy because of the transit of cargo over three thousand boats a year, of which Ten percent transports hazardous materials. Italy and France have banned the Strait the transit of ships with cargo at risk, but unfortunately, this prohibition does not apply to all other flags. Greenpeace calls for urgent Italy several series of protective measures.
This morning the delegation was received by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, Marco De Giorgi, and the Director General for Nature Protection, Aldo Cosentino. Greenpeace has called for certain dates in which the Minister Prestigiacomo Meeting the French Minister to present the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) a proposal for the inclusion of the strait in the list of Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSA). The Directorate General has undertaken to attend a meeting with local communities to start the project of the International Marine Park and to update the delegation on the progress in this regard, the initiation of these measures by the end of October.
The appeal made to the Ministers of Environment of Italy and France was signed on 3 August by more than thirty representatives of local governments of Sardinia and Corsica (including the Vice-President of Sardinia, the President of the province and Olbia Tempio Mayors of 14 municipalities in the north of Sardinia) on board the Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace's flagship, anchored off the islands of Lavezzi.
Boka also found within the Sanctuary of Cetaceans "Pelagos. Greenpeace for years denounced the degradation the Sanctuary, providing accurate data to the Ministry and requested that action is taken about it, but until now nothing has been done.
Greenpeace has been busy this summer with a tour of the Rainbow Warrior in defense of the Mediterranean, and sailed in the Sanctuary of cetaceans by promoting and carrying out monitoring activities, starting from this part of the sea, creating a network of Marine Reserves fully protected, covering 40% of the sea.
