Merlin, The Wizard of King Arthur' - Part Two -

French poet Robert de Boron, perhaps originating in the lands of Burgundy, in his fictional trilogy about the history of the Grail, written in the late twelfth century and consists of three novels, assigned to our wise prophet role in the history and the world of Arthur. In this work, told the story of the sacred chalice of the Last Supper of Jesus, who was brought to the West and recovered from a knight of the Round Table Arthur, brave spotless.
The role of Merlin in this extraordinary event is crucial. He is the protector and educator of young Arthur and, after the death of his father Uther Pendragon, he becomes the wise counselor who suggested that the Round Table and create a virtuous realm that is the ideal environment for the noble knights. There also appears the reason for the mythological "Sword in the stone, the weapon that only the true heir of the king can pull anvil carved in stone. Once you have extracted the sword Arthur, Merlin will proclaim him king. Later, when the sword will break, it will get a new Arthur, the famous Excalibur, the Lady of the Lake.

the story of Merlin was added an epilogue to the original and a bit romantic. The death of the wise wizard, as is the cycle of Lancelot in the later novels and other prose of the thirteenth century, also has an ironic aspect. In this version the magician, already an old man, falls madly in love with a beautiful girl named Nimue, and yielding to his insistence, teaches the art of magic. She learns so many of his spells, and put into practice one, the magician himself imprisoned in a cave, or a tower of air or a crystal bell. In this enchanted prison remains locked anziamo the wizard Merlin and from there, deep in the forest, run occasionally her plaintive cries.
sources differ on why the pretty girl has caught us if Noah was tired of his courtship, if hate or for love. It should be noted, however, that this ending is a recurring theme of the clergy of the time: a wise man once ensnared and become a slave of love, can not escape the subtle cunning of women.

In the cycle of King Arthur, Merlin appears as a powerful sorcerer able to control the elements. In addition to the prophetic ability, he could talk to animals, become invisible, assume different appearances and also control the nature and climate. In the tradition novels is a medieval alchemist or a sorcerer, able, being an expert on the subject, to transform it. Another aspect of his power was to rule him to be supernatural, like diavili, moreover, he was the son of the devil, according to Welsh tradition, so do not be surprised by his familiarity with otherworldly creatures. It is said that he spoke with the fairies, gnomes and dragons, succeeding only in humans, to gain respect.

In conclusion, the figure of Merlin is one of the most enigmatic of the medieval world.
